City, Moreno Valley Unified School District Establish Program to Provide At-risk Students Training, Work Experience

The City of Moreno Valley and the Moreno Valley Unified School District signed their first-ever Joint Resolution today, establishing another first: a collaborative program to provide invaluable work experience to some of the City's most vulnerable youth.

Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and Susan Smith, president of the Moreno Valley Unified School Board, signed the resolution at a City Hall ceremony.

The Mayor’s Apprenticeship Program Promoting Employment Development - M.A.P.P.E.D - will launch this fall.

“The opportunity to gain work experience is critical to the future success of our young people,” said Mayor Gutierrez. “Current circumstances should not define anyone’s future. We as a City have an opportunity to lift up our most vulnerable children and provide them with the skills and the confidence they need to define their futures.”

M.A.P.P.E.D. will provide high school students of all abilities with support, training, and work experience to help them excel after high school. The 12-week program is designed for students with mild to moderate special needs, are English learners, and who come from a lower socio-economic status.

Participants will be selected by MVUSD from the district’s existing school to work transition program. 
Students successfully completing the program will receive up to a $500 stipend depending upon the number of work hours completed.

The City also partners with Val Verde Unified School District to provide students paid internships at a variety of City departments through its Summer at City Hall program
