Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez Joins Latino Leaders in New York City for NALEO National Policy Institute on Workforce Development

Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez joined the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the nation’s preeminent Latino leadership organization, and nearly 50 other Latino officials from across the country for the NALEO National Policy Institute on Workforce Development held last week in New York, New York.

Technology is fueling our nation’s rapid economic change and causing the biggest workforce transition since the Industrial Revolution. This shift has brought forth economic opportunity for those who have access to the knowledge and tools needed to build and transform their skillsets to compete in the present and future labor market. Policymakers have an important role to play in this next frontier as they work to prepare and equip their constituents and the Latino workforce for these emerging economic opportunities.

Our creativity is working. International and Fortune 500 companies are choosing our community, and our residents are being hired for jobs that keep them closer to their homes and their families.”

NALEO Educational Fund brought together Mayor Gutierrez and other officials for a two-day convening focused on deepening their knowledge around current workforce issues and addressing various approaches to strengthen their jurisdictions’ workforce development.

Topics addressed through the Institute curriculum included:

• Preparing Latinos for the workforce of tomorrow
• Leveraging opportunities in the digital economy
• Integrated reentry and employment strategies to strengthen job readiness
• Turning job skills into careers
• Industry sector strategies: Healthcare, Energy, Manufacturing and Service

During the Institute, Mayor Gutierrez networked with Latino leaders from across the country as they discussed innovative and successful workforce development policies and best practices to drive economic success in the labor market for their respective constituents, communities, and regions.
