Residents urged to conserve energy Tuesday and Wednesday

With a heat wave predicted to continue baking California over the next few days, the manager of the state's power grid issued a statewide Flex Alert for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Residents are being asked to voluntarily conserve electricity to ease demand on the system and help prevent blackouts from occurring.

The Flex Alert issued by the California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO) will be in effect from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Flex Alerts are issued when the electricity grid is under stress to meet demand from generation or transmission outages, or from persistent hot temperatures.

Residents are being urged to make an extra effort to conserve during late afternoon hours, when air conditioners are used the most.

Conservation tips

A Flex Alert is an urgent call to Californians to immediately conserve electricity and to shift demand to off-peak hours (after 9 p.m.). You can:

  • Turn off unneeded lights and appliances
  • Use major appliances before 2 p.m. or after 9 p.m.
  • Adjust air conditioner to 78 degrees or higher; turn off when leaving home
  • Pull drapes and turn on fans
  • Set pool pumps for overnight cycle

Please monitor the California ISO website at www.caiso.com for updated information, or contact Moreno Valley Utility at 951.413.3500 or 1.844.341.6469.
