Measure L – The Hotel Tax General Information

On August 4, 2016 the Moreno Valley City Council voted to place Measure L on the 2016 November ballot for the residents’ consideration. Measure L is a hotel tax and is not a tax on residents or local businesses. The hotel tax would be paid by out-of-town visitors and tourists when they stay at a hotel or motel in Moreno Valley.

Over the last five years Sacramento politicians have taken millions of dollars from Moreno Valley, impacting the City’s ability to provide the services and programs at the levels local residents want. If approved, Measure L would create a locally-controlled source of funding for vital city services such as police, fire, 9-1-1 emergency response, libraries and street repair. 

Violent crime is on the rise in our region and more and more gang members are coming into Moreno Valley from other Southern California communities to commit crimes. If approved, Measure L would help maintain gang and drug prevention programs, maintain the number of police officers on our streets, and consequently make Moreno Valley safer.

Maintaining response times for 9-1-1 calls is also important.  If approved, Measure L would help maintain rapid response times by our City’s paramedics, firefighters, and emergency medical workers who are the first to respond to emergencies and save lives.

Measure L requires strict accountability including a financial oversight committee and annual independent financial audits to ensure that funds are spent properly and used locally for Moreno Valley’s benefit only. Measure funds are required by law to stay local and cannot be taken by the State.

Vote-By-Mail & Absentee Voter Information

Ballots for permanent absentee voters are mailed out the week of October 10. If you did not receive your ballot, contact the Riverside County Voter Registration and Elections Department at (951) 486-7200 or review your sample ballot for more information.

  • If you are voting by mail, your ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day (November 8th). If you are a permanent absentee voter and have not received your ballot call (951) 486-7200.
  • Your completed mail ballot may be returned to any Riverside County Polling Place on Election Day, from 7am to 8pm.
