Animal Shelter Extends Service to Help Residents
Reclaim Lost Pets over Holiday Weekend

The 4th of July can be a fearful time for some pets.  Dogs are often frightened by fireworks, causing them to escape their yards. If a resident loses a pet over the 4th of July holiday weekend, staff will be available to those residents on Sunday and Monday to help pet owners reclaim pets in the City’s shelter:

  • Sunday, July 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Monday, July 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter will be open Friday, July 3rd from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and closed on Saturday, July 4th.

To verify a lost pet is housed at the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter, residents are encouraged to check the City of Moreno Valley and Pet Harbor websites to search for their pet on-line at www.moval.org and www.petharbor.com. If the pet is located on-line, residents can call the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter at 951.413.3790 to arrange a time to reclaim their pet.

The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter urges residents to take the following precautions to protect your animals during the 4th of July festivities and hot summer days:

  • Keep pets safe from the noise of fireworks in a quiet, sheltered, and escape proof area of your home
  • Resist taking pets to loud, crowded fireworks displays
  • Microchip your pet for permanent identification and keep a current license or ID on your pet
  • Never leave a pet inside a vehicle on hot days. Cracked windows will not prevent the animal from heatstroke
  • Exercise your pet in the early morning hours when temperatures are cooler
  • Provide outdoor pets with plenty of shade and access to a fresh supply of water at all times
  • Avoid walking your pet on hot asphalt or concrete, high temperatures will cause their body temperature to quickly rise and hot surfaces can burn their paws
  • Older and overweight pets should be kept in air conditioned rooms as much as possible
  • See your local veterinarian for a summer checkup to discuss methods for flea and tick control
