Moreno Valley Students Win America Recycles Day Art Contest
Twelve students from the City of Moreno Valley were named winners of an America Recycles Day calendar art contest, sponsored by a Keep America Beautiful and Waste Management Think Green® Grant, for their illustrations of improved recycling practices for a cleaner environment.
The contest challenged participants to depict the theme "Give your Trash another Life-Recycle Often and Recycle Right!" and incorporate small acts that increase the number of recyclables put to reuse.
The Moreno Valley Morning Optimist Club was the recipient of the $4,000 Keep America Beautiful and Waste Management Think Green® grant. The local non-profit brought together public and private representatives to organize the contest centered on engaging children in recycling habits through artistic expression. Participating entities included City staff, the Moreno Valley and Val Verde School Districts and local Waste Management representatives.
Moreno Valley Mayor Jesse Molina, Janet DuHaime from the Moreno Valley Morning Optimist Club and Waste Management Recycling Manager Diesel Navarro chose the 12 winning illustrations, which will serve to create a 2015 City calendar. The judges selected the winners based on interpretation of theme, creativity, originality and age appropriateness.

Cheyenne James' drawing of a young girl placing clean items in the recycling bin and their potential to become something new earned her the esteemed first place title and an $800 donation for Vista Heights Middle School. Second place winner, Liliana Farias, drew recyclables wishing to become new products and won $600 for Vista Heights Middle School. Genesis Madrigal won $400 for March Middle School for her illustration of a contaminated environment without recycling. Additionally, all 12 winners received gift baskets with art supplies and eco-friendly merchandise, and Cheyenne, Liliana and Genesis won ice cream parties for their homeroom classrooms.
