State of California Recognizes Traffic Safety Achievements by Moreno Valley’s
Police Department
Traffic collisions, fatalities, and injuries are serious issues facing every community in California. Moreno Valley’s law enforcement officials have taken it upon themselves to address these crucial community concerns.
 The City of Moreno Valley is proud to announce that yesterday, Director Chris Murphy of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Commissioner Joseph A. Farrow of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) recognized efforts by the Moreno Valley Police Department (MVPD) in 2011 to lower traffic accident-related deaths and injuries.
MVPD received 1st Place Honors and Special Recognition for Speed Awareness in the California Law Enforcement Challenge, a competition between law enforcement agencies of similar size and type, that recognizes the best overall traffic safety programs in California. The MVPD Traffic Division has also earned the 2nd Place award in the National Law Enforcement Challenge.
OTS also specifically honored Officer Eric Robinson and Corporal James Hamrick for their individual efforts in DUI and traffic safety enforcement in 2011. Officer Robinson was recognized for identifying and arresting 324 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Corporal Hamrick was recognized for issuing 1,762 citations for driving at an unsafe speed. Actions by both significantly contributed to the safety of the drivers and the Moreno Valley community.
The California Law Enforcement Challenge evaluates agencies on the following categories:
- Policy Statements on Traffic Safety Programs,
- Officer Training,
- Public Information & Education,
- Enforcement Activities,
- Effectiveness,
- Incentives & Recognition, and
- Quality of Submission.
Through the program, law enforcement agencies are recognized for their traffic safety accomplishments and encouraged to set comprehensive goals, to reach new heights in traffic safety, and to share their experiences with others. In short, the California Law Enforcement Challenge inspires agencies to make a difference in the communities their officers serve each day. Saving lives and reducing the frequency and severity of injuries are the true rewards of law enforcement's efforts.
Moreno Valley’s law enforcement officials set ambitious goals for traffic safety enforcement and education, including prevention of traffic fatalities (which now occur in California at the rate of one every two hours), reduction of the number of serious injuries resulting from traffic collisions, and positively impacting the spiraling emergency services and health care costs.
To meet these goals, the MVPD continued efforts to educate the public and enforce the laws pertaining to occupant protection, speed, and impaired driving-related offenses. With just 6 fatal traffic collisions in 2011, the City of Moreno Valley continues to be one of the safest American cities of its size for drivers and pedestrians.
Funding for traffic safety campaigns is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
