Moreno Valley Weather Damage Response

An unusual summer storm moved through Moreno Valley yesterday, clogging storm drains, damaging trees and interrupting traffic signals in several areas. Most impacted were the neighborhoods near the intersection of Alessandro Blvd. and Redlands Blvd. in eastern Moreno Valley, where heavy rains caused flooding and several streets were temporarily un-passable due to accumulated mud and debris.

The City activated its Emergency Operations Center, and Public Safety (Police and Fire) and Public Works crews responded immediately, establishing a staging area in Moreno Valley's most-impacted region. Sandbags were provided to residents yesterday and will be available again this afternoon.

Fire, Police, and Public Works teams addressed multiple flood-related emergencies. The Fire Department responded to several traffic collisions (one with serious injuries) and successfully conducted three swift water rescues. A total of four homes were deemed unsafe to occupy. One family (2 adults and 2 dogs) accepted temporary housing from the Red Cross, two families found other accommodations, and one family opted to remain in their home.

All available mud-clearing equipment was utilized and Public Work crews remained well into the night, removing mud and debris from arterial roadways (Moreno Beach, Redlands, Cactus, Alessandro) and storm drain channels. Post-storm cleanup resumed at 6:30 this morning and all arterials are now open and passable.

Crews continue to address residential streets, including the area of Campbell, Maltby, and Kimberly avenues. Additional clean-up efforts will continue next week. Residual mud will be removed after allowing for a sufficient drying period (typically one week) to ensure the effectiveness of the clean-up efforts.

The City will continue staffing the Maintenance & Operations phone line today (Friday, August 31) for storm-related issues in the public right-of-way, such as downed trees.
