City to Remember Fallen Soldiers with Sunset Memorial Day Ceremony

The City of Moreno Valley will host a sunset Memorial Day ceremony on Wednesday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. to honor those soldiers who gave their lives while serving our nation. The annual ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial, located on Memorial Circle at the Moreno Valley Civic Center, 14177 Frederick Street.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will open with the Moreno Valley Master Chorale singing patriotic songs followed by a "missing man formation" fly over. The ceremony will include remarks and war letter readings by Mayor Richard A. Stewart and Mayor Pro Tem William H. Batey II, as well as Council Members Jesse L. Molina, Marcelo Co, and Robin N. Hastings. In honor of all who have served, the Mayor and Knights of Columbus A. F. Chelbana Assembly will lay a wreath at the Memorial while "Amazing Grace" is performed on the bagpipes by Forrest Cormany. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of echo "Taps".

Dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 2007, the granite walls of the City's Veterans Memorial include the engraved names of eight Moreno Valley soldiers killed in action. Pavers surrounding the monument include the names of both current and veteran military personnel. Additionally, Memorial Day is the first installation of four new appreciation banners honoring Moreno Valley residents who are currently serving in the military. These banners will be displayed on the street light poles on Cactus Avenue east of Frederick Street.

A time of visiting and fellowship will follow the ceremony. Light refreshments will be served.
